Official: 2014 Mazda 3 completely revealed [Video]

The Mazda 3 was always a cool car. It still is a good product with a decent price, but people never really got into it. From today, Mazda wants to change that. They introduced the new "3" which wants to rival such cars like the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Opel Astra, with a completely new car.

The exterior, which is 4465mm long, 1795mm wide (2053mm with mirrors), 1450mm high and has a wheelbase with 2700mm, follows the new Kodos design language premiered on the Mazda 6, giving a more aggressive look with its signature wing grille and sculpted body shapes. But if you see the car from the side, it still looks a lot like the previous model. The back reminds me of the Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback with the slopping rear window.

The interior is somewhat similar to that used in many BMW models, and features an all-new design. It is also bigger, uses new and better quality materials, and now comes with a Active Driving Display, 7-inch WVGA touchscreen display and you can have a BOSE sound system. The boot has room for 350 liters.

When the Mazda 3 arrives at dealers, the Korean company will provide three petrol engines and one diesel with SkyActiv technology. Starting with the diesel unit, it has 2184cm3, a power output of 150PS (110kW or 148bhp), and 380Nm (280lb/ft) of torque. Has a top speed of 210km/h (131mph) with a six-speed manual gearbox (201km/h or 125mph with the six-speed automatic transmission), and can accelerate the car from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in just 8.1 seconds (9.7 seconds with six-speed automatic transmission).

Moving to the petrol engines, the less powerful is a 1.5-liter unit that produces 100PS (75kW or 99bhp) and 150Nm (111lb/ft). This engine allows the new Mazda 3 to reach a top speed of 182km/h (113mph) and accelerate from standstill up to 100km/h in 10.8 seconds. It is only available with a six-speed gearbox.

Next we have a 2.0-liter engine with two different power outputs. The least powerful version has 120PS (85kW or 118bhp) and 210Nm (155lb/ft), while the more powerful has 165PS (121kW or 163bhp) and the same 210Nm (155lb/ft) of torque thanks in part to the i-Eloop brake energy regeneration system. They have a maximum speed of 195km/h (121mph) (194km/h or 120.5mph with the 6AT) and 210km/h (131mph), respectively, while the time they take to reach 100km/h is 8.9 (10.4 with the 6AT) and 8.2 seconds.

The Mazda 3 when fitted with a petrol engine weighs about 1200kg (2646lbs) and when joined with the diesel unit it has a little over 1300kg (2866lbs). For now, nothing was revealed about the fuel consumption, and i think Mazda needs to add a weaker and cheaper diesel engine in some markets, so it can be more competitive.
