Tesla says the next Roadster will be something special

When the first Tesla Roadster was introduced, it was described as something fantastic and revolutionary. It was a rear wheel drive electric car with two seats with the engine behind the driver, like all good sports cars, that could reach 201 km/h (125mph), had a range of over 320km (200 miles) and took less than four seconds to reach 100km/h (62mph) from standstill.

Pretty cool, right? (Detroit Electric says the SP:01 is better) But Tesla is now saying a new Roadster could be on the market in five years, and that the new model will be even better that the old one. George Blankenship, Vice President, Sales & Ownership Experience, added that: "...we go back to the roadster and do things that people aren’t doing and push the envelope. That would be the next-generation roadster."

But for the next few years, Tesla wants to introduce the Model X in 2014, which is a SUV, and a smaller unnamed sedan to slot it below the Model S, possibly in 2016. Only then they will think about the new Roadster.
